Food is a universal and easy way to understand the culture, tradition and lifestyle of a place. When you travel to different places and regions of India, you get special food dishes. Makki roti and mustard greens, dhokla, rogan josh, litti chokha, tandoori, naan bread, butter chicken etc. But if you want to taste South Indian food then you have to turn your head south.
South Indian food is mainly known for its taste, smell, culture and tradition, which can be found in various places around the world. Southern India consists mostly of five major states; Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu. Which have common dishes as well as regional dishes.

1. Appams - Appam is a delicious dish of Kerala and Tamil Nadu in a popular Indian state made with fermented rice flour and coconut milk solution.
They are thin and crepes-like, served hot with tanga pal (coconut milk) or kurma. People here like to eat it from morning breakfast to dinner. Rice, coconut and other vegetables are the main ingredient for making it. It can be made in both sweet and salty varieties. It depends on your taste but you must taste it.
2. Biryani - Biryani is the most famous food dish in India, it remains the choice of every other person in every region of India. Biryani can be found in various styles and variations across in India, which vary according to the taste of each region. Of which Hyderabadi is the most famous in South India, there are more than 40 varieties with Kerala style Malabar, Deendigulbayani in Tamil Nadu, Thalasseribayani in Karnataka, Bhatkalibiriyani.
To make biryani, basmati rice is basically cooked mutton, or chicken meat, vegetables such as onions, peppers, carrots, beans and ginger garlic and spices like turmeric, cloves, pepper, cinnamon and cardamom; Cashew, raisins and saffron are sometimes sprinkled on it to taste. This dish can be both vegetarian and non vegetarian. It is served with raita which adds to its flavor.
3. Idli - Like a small, soft, white, spongy cake, idli is a traditional South Indian traditional dish that people eat for breakfast, although you will find it in the plate of people on the dining table all over the country.
It is made from fermented lentils and rice solution in small circular molds with steam, and then the spherical rice cake is usually served with sambar, chutney and native ghee. There are many other versions of Idli in India including Raba Idli. Idli is a light food, if you want to give your stomach a rest with rich food then it is better.
4. Kaapi - Fresh sunshine and filter coffee of South India is enough here to start the day beautifully. People of South India like it very much, and coffee lovers are of the opinion that there cannot be any other coffee in the whole of India like the Kappi (coffee) of the South.
To make Kappi filter coffee in South India, the coffee is put into a steel filter, mixed with boiled hot milk and then sugar. In serving, the coffee is poured between two glasses of height from each other to make it strong foamy. Coffee growing regions in southern India include the hills of Karnataka (Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan), Kerala (Malabar region) and Tamil Nadu (Nilgiri district, Yercaud and Kodaikanal), but the most famous place for filter coffee is Coorg.
5. Masala Dosa - Masala Dosa is a popular and delicious South Indian traditional breakfast dish that is very much liked by the people all over the world, it is made from a mixture of fermented rice and lentils. It is then cooked in a thin pancake, which is thin crepe and crispy, served hot with coconut sauce and sambar (a hot lentil soup). It can be found all over India and abroad.
With the huge popularity of masala dosa, you will also find some variations of this dish; Such as - Masala Dosa (filled with potato, mustard seeds, green chillies and spice stuffing), Mouser Masala Dosa, Onion Masala Dosa, Rava (made from semolina) Masala Dosa; And some new types of cheese or mixed vegetables can also be found in dosa. But you choose any dosa, you should start tasting this dish with masala dosa.
6. Payasam - Payasam or Kheer Pure is a famous milk, sugar and rice pudding or sweet dish in India, while it is a traditional dessert in Andhra Pradesh. It is served as a main course during small festivals to major festivals and major events. In making Payasam, rice or vermicelli is boiled in hot milk and sugar (Chini) or sugary (Shakkar) is added as per taste and can be added cardamom, cashew, almond, raisins, chironji to make it better. Sometimes jaggery also replaces sugar, you can sprinkle saffron on top.
7. Pesarattu - Pesarattu This is a kind of dosa, hence it is also called moong dal dosa. It is the most popular dish of Andhra Pradesh, which is eaten from breakfast in the morning to dinner as it is one of the good options for healthy and nutritious. It is made with lentil or moong dal and served with ginger or tamarind chutney. Its name 'Pesarattu' is derived from two words "Pesara" and "attu"; Pesara Means Masoor Dal or Moong Dal, Attu Means Dosa.

8. Upma - Upma is a breakfast dish made in India made from semolina or rice, which is found in breakfast in a plate of people in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, South India. It is traditionally served hot for breakfast, which is used to make roasted semolina or rice cooked as a thick porridge.
It is better in taste and slightly softer in eat; It helps in digestion. To cook it with rice or semolina, to improve its taste it contains various vegetables like; as beans, peppers and onions etc. and spices; Besides turmeric and chili, seasoning is also commonly added to the dish. It depends on personal preference and taste, currently it is very popular all over India and is made in various ways.
9. Uttapam - If you are thinking whether it is a pancake or a pizza, then you have guessed wrong. It is a uttapam, it is made from a solution of fermented rice and lentils and vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, onions, carrots, etc. are added. It is softer, crisper, more thick and short as opposed to mango dosa. It can be served with toppings and also with sambar or chutney.

10. Vada - Vada is a South Indian oil-fried breakfast dish, made by making a paste of black lentils, other Pigeon pea (Arhar), Vigna mungo (Urad) and Mung bean (moong), and using spices and vegetables. It is like a little brown donut, it is better if you want to eat fried and hot, crispy. It is served with coconut chutney and sambar.
